Dear John,
Cutting methane emissions is the fastest opportunity we have to immediately slow the rate of global warming. That’s why the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) latest rule is a game changer.
EPA has just introduced a rule that will cut methane pollution from thousands of oil and gas facilities, protecting the health of millions of Americans in the process. These rules will bring nearly 1 million older, pre-existing oil and gas wells under federal oversight for the first time. And though that’s a strong start, they still need to go farther. The proposed rules must be strengthened before they are finalized to ensure that key pollution sources like smaller leak-prone wells and flaring are addressed.
The oil and gas industry shouldn’t remain unchecked! It’s time for the EPA to enforce limits on methane pollution that will combat the climate crisis and protect our air! Demand the EPA strengthen their new rules today to ensure we meet the moment on climate change.
To date, the U.S. oil and gas industry emits 16 million metric tons of methane annually and this incredibly potent pollutant is responsible for 25% of the warming we experience today. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
By advancing new rules that strengthen existing emissions requirements, we can significantly slash methane pollution from hundreds of thousands of existing sources nationwide for the first time. This proposal can accomplish that, while also addressing the industry’s second largest source of methane pollution, pneumatic controllers, and enabling the use of advanced screening technologies to more quickly find and fix leaks across all sites.
Curbing methane emissions is a necessary step to slow the rate of warming and avert the worst climate risks. Show your support for this game changing rule and help the EPA cut climate pollution immediately!
Thank you for your support,
