I was proud to cast my vote for the Build Back Better Act on Friday to save lives.
For months, my progressive colleagues and I have been working to get this done and fulfill President Biden's agenda. No matter what tricks conservative Democrats tried to play or what the media said, we held the line. And when Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump's Republican cronies tried to block the bill, we never faltered.
Throughout the late nights and early mornings, I never lost sight of the people this bill would benefit. The single mothers who would gain necessary help with childcare. The folks who no longer would need to ration their food in order to afford insulin. The home care workers who would finally see wages that more closely match the dignity of their work.
John, this is about so much more than insider politics and CBO scores. This work is about our children, our elders, our parents, our families, our communities, and our planet.
For years, St. Louis has had to accept only "crumbs" from Congress. It's why families have struggled to keep their homes, children have gone to bed hungry, and why folks have gone bankrupt trying to afford their health care bills.
No more. I came to Congress to do the most for everyone, starting with those who have the least. And I won't accept anything less than the world for our St. Louis community, because I know that when we deliver transformative policies, the sky is not even our limit.
Now, I promise to continue working until this bill is signed into law by President Biden. The Build Back Better Act now heads to the Senate where conservative Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have delayed this bill at every given opportunity.
I will do everything in my power to make sure the full Build Back Better Act is signed into law, but it's going to take a widespread, grassroots effort to show Manchin and Sinema that we won't accept anything less.
