Bowie’s guardian had good intentions—keeping Bowie and the rest of his flock as companions rather than raising them for meat.

But there was a problem. Bowie and his flock were kept in a small pen that wasn’t nearly large enough for these adventurous birds. Frustrated and claustrophobic, Bowie started aggressively pecking at the chickens in his flock. Thankfully, Bowie’s guardian chose kindness and sent him to Farm Sanctuary.

While his situation was bad, Bowie’s over-crowded pen was a far better life than turkeys are allowed on factory farms. In fact, they are typically “debeaked” to prevent them from harming each other (and the industry’s profit).

Animals like Bowie need space to spread their wings. They yearn for freedom.

Today, Bowie enjoys his spacious domain, which is also home to rooster pals Dale and Eric. He loves his chicken friends. He and Eric often have epic “dance-offs”—puffing their feathers and strutting about to show off.
