In England and Wales, it is a crime for a woman to end her own pregnancy at any gestation without the permission of two doctors. The crime carries a maximum life sentence, the harshest in the world, and was passed more than 50 years before women even had the vote.
For some very vulnerable women, travelling to an abortion clinic is nearly impossible. This includes victims of domestic violence, those with severe pregnancy sickness, and those caring for disabled relatives.
During the pandemic, women can receive early medical abortion pills from the safety and privacy of their own home without having to attend a clinic. However, the government are currently considering revoking permission for this service. If it is removed, women in desperate situations will once again turn to online abortion pills, and risk life imprisonment.
The government are considering a cross-party amendment which would remove women before 24 weeks gestation from the criminal law related to abortion – meaning that women would not be criminalised for ending or attempting to end their own pregnancy.
We only have until 10pm tonight (Monday 22nd November) to get as many MPs as possible to co-sign the amendment and show the government that this is an issue which deserves a debate and a vote. The Bill is being debated tomorrow – so we need your help NOW.
Please ask your MP to co-sign this amendment. It takes just 1 minute using our online tool here.
