John -- If Republicans get away with gerrymandering the maps this year, Democrats could face a decade in the dark. And while map manipulation has been around since the early 1800s, new software and data allow Republicans to carve up districts with a surgical precision we’ve never seen before.

A new piece in Slate sums up perfectly how the conservative majority on the Supreme Court -- in addition to Republicans in Congress -- have ignored these developments and abdicated their responsibility to protect our democracy:

The good news is we have a plan in place to fight back , and we’ve won some BIG victories since our launch in 2017. We’ve helped flip governor’s offices and state legislatures, break Republican supermajorities, and pass bipartisan redistricting reforms in several states.

Now our plan involves putting staff on the ground in key states, analyzing proposed maps and holding Republicans accountable for gerrymanders, and supporting plaintiffs in lawsuits where necessary. And with new maps being proposed and passed into law every week , this work couldn’t be more urgent.

President Obama said that “I believe activism will prevail over cynicism.” But that will only be true if folks all over the country make the choice to get involved in the process and put Republicans on notice.
