Dear John,
It was 1969 when abortion wasn’t legal.
It was terrifying, painful, and done in a hotel room. I wasn’t damaged but could easily have been. I was traumatized, as much by the secrecy as by the physical pain.
My unwanted pregnancy threatened my future. It threatened my physical and mental wellbeing. The decision to end it wasn’t an easy one, but if I’d had a baby at 21, I’d never have finished school, become a therapist, gotten married and had my two much-loved children.
Now I’m scared again, John. Not for myself, but for young people who can become pregnant across this country.
