Join Petition to Halt Devastating Wild Horse Roundup

Dear John,

The largest roundup in US history is presently underway in Wyoming. The Bureau of Land Management--the federal agency that manages the vast majority of America's wild horses--is removing a staggering 3,555 wild horses from Wyoming's Checkerboard region. This roundup will clear out nearly half of the state's total population of wild horses.

During roundups, helicopters chase and stampede panicked wild horses; these brutal operations come at enormous taxpayer expense and regularly result in injuries and deaths to these federally protected icons of the West. Several horses have already died as a result of the Checkerboard roundup, which has removed approximately 1,700 horses thus far.

Although herds in the Checkerboard are a popular tourist draw--the local travel and tourism board touts the area as "the best chance to see" wild horses and "proof that the American spirit still thrives here"--powerful livestock grazing interests have put pressure on the BLM to remove these horses from public lands.

What You Can Do

It's not too late to sign this petition to the Department of the Interior ([link removed])*--if you haven't already--opposing this massive roundup operation, which is subjecting wild horses to needless suffering and will result in thousands of horses being separated from their family bands, only to be confined in holding facilities for the rest of their lives. Signatures will be delivered to the Department of the Interior, so please sign and share this eAlert with your family, friends, and co-workers so they can sign too.

Thank you in advance for your help and for all you do for animals!

Sincerely,

Joanna Grossman, PhD
Equine Program Manager
