Every day, I go to work thinking about how to make our government work better for working families. So as an advocate for working people, a co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a proud union member, it felt like coming home to be a guest on the AFL-CIO’s podcast, “State of the Unions.”

We talked about what it was like growing up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and how I got my start in the Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) union. I also confessed what my first job was. (You’ll never guess it.)

Most importantly, we got to talk about the real work of unions and activists: tipping the balance of power back toward working people. There are thousands of lobbyists in Washington, D.C., working on behalf of big corporations—so it’s our duty to ensure that our labor movement’s voice is heard even louder.
