Hi, John. For too long, our immigration system has been broken. Here in the Valley, we feel this every day.
The struggle for immigration reform is personal for me – one of my fondest memories growing up in Turlock was spending time after school with my Assyrian neighbor. Her name was Nana Bitpera, and she was like a grandmother to me. My brother and I would help her pick grape leaves in her backyard and make fresh, homemade dolmas.
And over plates of her delicious dolmas, she would tell us stories: about how Assyrians have made incredible contributions to global art and culture, how they were the first people to domesticate crops, and how they – quite literally! – invented the wheel.
She would also tell us about how Assyrians have sadly faced centuries of persecution, which caused many of them to come to the United States for a new future where they can pursue their own American dreams.
So although I can never truly understand the immigrant experience, I’ve felt a deep sense of kinship since childhood. And it’s what drives me to do my part in creating a better future for the immigrants who are our friends, classmates, and neighbors.
There are over 10,000 Dreamers in my community who are as American as you and I, but are forced to live in the shadows. I was proud to cosponsor and vote to pass the Dream and Promise Act to provide a pathway to citizenship.
But I know this work is nowhere near done, which is why I’m committed to comprehensive immigration reform. It’s time we fix our broken immigration system, and I know we can do it. It’s what our immigrant communities who have contributed so much to our country’s history and prosperity deserve.
Thanks for reading,
Josh
