John — I have some thoughts on the climate crisis facing our planet I’d like to share, so this email is a little longer than usual. I hope you’ll read to the end.

For decades, climate experts have given the same warning. That we were running out of time to take the action necessary to save our planet.

Now, the clock has run down.

We’re out of time to reverse the damage of climate change entirely. Recent reports suggest that 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming — the temperature at which experts hoped to stop warming entirely — is inevitable in the next 20 years and that even if nations meet their current pledges to reduce carbon emissions, we’re headed for warming of 2.7 °C by the end of the century.

We have committed ourselves to a certain level of warming – at least 1.5 °C. At that point, we can expect bigger storms, longer droughts, hotter summers, and more harmful outcomes of climate change. We must prepare our communities to face the challenges of a warmer world.

That means investing in our frontline communities — like those in North Carolina’s Outer Banks — so they can prepare for rising sea levels. It means determining more efficient ways to produce crops in the face of changing, extreme weather. It means building more resilient infrastructure that can withstand stronger storms.

It will mean doing whatever it takes to mitigate the harm.

But 2.7 °C? That would be truly catastrophic, John.

We need to change course now. And I believe that we can.

What it comes down to is this: If we don’t prioritize defending against climate change at the societal level — ending our reliance on fossil fuels, going carbon neutral, and fundamentally changing the way we think about our duty to this planet — our children will be left with a world that can’t sustain them.

It’s why, just last month, I proudly signed historic legislation to reduce North Carolina’s carbon emissions by 70% by 2030 and to go carbon neutral by 2050. It’s why promoting clean energy alternatives is a priority of our administration.

But my actions alone won’t be enough.

We MUST elect leaders at every level of government who recognize the severity of this crisis and are ready to act.
