Friend: As you very well know, former President Donald Trump and the cronies he installed throughout our federal government did whatever they could to decimate our democratic institutions. From the judiciary to the State Department, the twice-impeached president installed loyalists who not only demoralized career staff, but utterly desecrated the integrity of our democracy.
Since voters elected Democrats in Congress – and President Joe Biden – with a mandate to fix the disaster of the last four years, we have had an unprecedented opportunity to restore faith in our government and reinforce the strength of our democratic institutions.
There’s just one problem. Two problems, really – two problematic, obstructionist senators: Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO). They are manipulating Senate procedure to single-handedly hold up President Biden’s crucial judicial, diplomatic, and national security appointments. In doing so, they are acting as Trump flunkies, carrying forth the former President’s obstruction and jeopardizing the safety, security, and effectiveness of our government.
Senate precedent has dictated that non-controversial nominees of the President not be held up by arcane procedure. But Senators like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley don’t care about democratic norms. Their sole focus is to reimagine our government in the image of the corrupt man they take orders from: Donald Trump. I am counting on this grassroots team to join me in holding them accountable.
The vast majority of Republican senators have done nothing to help move our country forward over the last year. In fact, they are doing worse than nothing: They are using their positions and power to try to obstruct progress that the American people urgently want and need. Even worse, they are putting our diplomacy, national security, and judicial branch on thin ice. I won’t stand for it. I’ll fight back at every step. Thanks for fighting with me.
