We need meaningful criminal and juvenile justice reform now. We need it here in Polk County, Iowa, and we need it where you live, too, if you aren’t in Polk County.
We know the problems. Here are just a few:
* Racial and income disparities.
* Overcharging.
* A lack of transparency and data.
We also know the solutions. Here are some:
* Requesting cash bail only for those who are a threat to public safety.
* Charging what the evidence supports and focusing on serious and violent offenses.
* Keeping and publicly releasing detailed charging and demographic data.
