In 2019, I contracted a deadly virus that attacked my heart, which required emergency heart transplant surgery. I know the pain my Dad endured during that time – especially because of the uncertainty of whether my insurance would cover the surgery or not. Without Medicaid, I would not have been able to afford the operation that was needed to save my life. I would have had to sell my house, my Mom and Dad would have had to sell their house (my childhood home), and the saddest part would have been that I would still have millions in leftover debts after my parents and I sold our whole life.

And I was lucky.

But this is exactly why I am writing to you today. There are nearly 700,000 people without insurance in New Jersey, and millions more across the country.
