Friday morning was different from other days this week. In fact, America hasn’t seen a day like that for a long time. On Friday, my Democratic colleagues in the House passed President Joe Biden’s "Build Back Better" Ac, despite bipartisan opposition to the spending bill.
At a time when Americans are already facing the consequences of reckless spending by paying higher prices for gas at the pump and for food at the grocery store, President Biden and Speaker Pelosi responded by forcing through an estimated $4 trillion dollar tax-and-spending spree that will drive inflation even higher, hitting modest-income families the hardest.
Simply put, printing more money is not the path to prosperity, it’s a recipe for disaster. This bill expands the size and scope of the federal government to unprecedented levels and puts our country further into debt by adding $367 billion to the deficit. The bill will increase taxes for many working Americans while wealthy blue state elites will receive a tax carveout.
Here are just a handful of the harmful provisions in this massive tax-and-spend package that will, in President Biden’s own words, fundamentally change America:
- Provides large scale amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants,
- Offers subsidized college to illegal immigrants,
- Awards blue-state millionaires with tax relief by raising the SALT deduction,
- Hires 87,000 IRS agents to snoop on law-abiding citizens’ bank accounts,
- Implements a natural gas tax that could raise household electricity costs by 30 percent,
- Institutes a job-killing 15% minimum corporate tax rate,
- Allows the federal funding of abortions by not including Hyde amendment protections (which used to be bipartisan).
Instead of working to resolve the multiple crises facing our country, this bill doubles down on increased spending that will further antagonize rising prices, the labor shortage, the supply chain crisis, and the border crisis. I voted against this proposal that will fundamentally reshape Americans’ lives by requiring further reliance on the federal government.
