Content warning: Violence, suicide, LGBTQ+ discrimination

Friend,

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Tragically, it’s a day that is more important than ever.

Trans people and especially Trans people of color have faced disproportionately high rates of sucide and murder.

And it’s no coincidence that as legislators around the country attempt to delegitimize and undermine the trans experience with blatantly transphobic laws, violence against trans people has reached a shocking new high this year.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, my heart hurts for all trans and gender nonconforming people who face hate, discrimination, and isolation -- often at the hands of their own families.

And as a Member of Congress, I reaffirm my commitment to fight transphobia and discrimination in all it’s forms.

Today we remember and mourn all those that have been lost. Let it be a reminder to advance our fight for equality and dignity for all.

In solidarity,

Mark Takano
