The JMC Annual Summit on Higher Education
Should America's Colleges Teach Patriotism?
|
|
Can a free nation survive without patriotic citizens? A country that is not loved by its own people is unlikely to endure.
On October 3, 2019, JMC held its 16th National Summit on Higher Education to discuss whether colleges should play a role in producing patriotic citizens. An all-star panel, moderated by JMC board member Bill Kristol, included Peter Berkowitz (The Hoover Institution), Elizabeth Kaufer Busch (Christopher Newport University), and Robert Ingram (Ohio University).

John Agresto, former Chancellor of the American University of Iraq and President of St. John's College (ret.), gave the keynote address, discussing patriotism in the context of the principles on which America was founded. How do we understand and sustain patriotism in a nation that is based on individualism and equal rights more than ties of blood, kinship, religion or ethnicity?

October 30 marked 284 years since John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts. During his illustrious public life, Adams served as an American ambassador to Great Britain, George Washington’s vice president, and as our second president of the United States. To celebrate John Adams's legacy, we have gathered together a collection of works from JMC fellows and other scholars that consider his impact on American political thought and development.
