A microcosm of the broader Rust Belt, Clairton represents a portrait of the varied impacts of steel’s decline.

Photojournalist Quinn Glabicki spent 12 months in Clairton, documenting and speaking with more than 50 residents. They shared how their environment and community shape their lives, from illness and grief to hope and perseverance. Explore the photo essay here ([link removed]) .

As part of the project, PublicSource reporter Oliver Morrison also analyzed thousands of court documents filed in a lawsuit against U.S. Steel following the 2018 fire at the Clairton Coke Works. The documents provide the most detailed public look inside the plant's operations and how the company interacts with the county health department. See the two stories below:

“The thought of losing investigative local reporting is my worst nightmare.” — PublicSource member Karen

We’re with her — if there weren’t journalists like ours keeping tabs on what’s happening in our region and reporting back to the public, things could look bleak. PublicSource tracks development plans and projects in our communities, reports on how public funds are allocated, and puts the policies adopted by our region’s leaders in context, because Pittsburgh deserves to know. If you believe this is work worth supporting, please make a matched gift today. ([link removed])
