Right now, Oakland, CA, is experiencing a gun violence crisis. As of October 2021, Oakland homicides have surpassed 2020 totals and are up nearly 40% from 2019. 

This outsized crisis on Black and Brown residents requires immediate action — and we at Brady know it must be done in partnership with local community organizers and residents who experience the vicious cycles of gun violence. 

In partnership with Youth Alive!, Brady’s Combating Crime Guns Oakland Initiative is proud to release “An Oakland Story: Remembering Peek-a-boo.” This powerful video tells the story of Deante Miller — aka Peek-a-Boo — who was tragically shot and killed five years ago on November 28, 2016. Deante was a son, an avid athlete, and an aspiring architect.

This week in Aurora, CO, six teenagers were shot and injured near their high school. This tragedy is one of more than 620 mass shootings in 2021, and the longer we wait to take action, the more lives we risk.

Through advocacy and policy trainings, we’ll teach youth activists how to lobby their elected officials. Then, students will take their skills straight to Congress to help pass life-saving gun violence prevention legislation.

This week, Rep. Jackie Speier announced that she will not seek re-election in 2022. After serving 13 years in Congress, we thank Rep. Speier for using her voice as a survivor of gun violence to advocate for common-sense gun laws to protect public safety and save lives. Rep. Speier became an advocate for gun violence prevention after nearly losing her life in the 1978 Jonestown massacre in Guyana. She was shot five times at point-blank range, and it was 22 hours before help arrived. 

After she was elected to Congress in 2008, Rep. Speier helped secure vital funding to research gun violence and advocated for legislation to expand Brady Background Checks, ban assault weapons, enact extreme risk laws, and more. She chaired the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce, helping lead Congress to treat gun violence as the public health that it is.
