The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs
Friday, November 19, 2021
Dear John,
In her most recent Eye On Health Reform column, Katie Keith updates
readers about Washington's efforts to expand the Affordable Care Act.
Efforts To Expand The ACA
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) served as a safety net during the
pandemic. Marketplace enrollment peaked in light of the broad COVID-19
special enrollment period and enhanced premium tax credits under the
American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Now, Congress is considering how to build upon these developments
in the Build Back Better Act. In November's Eye On Health Reform
column, Katie Keith broke down what is in the bill.
At the time of the November issue release, the House proposal of the Act
would adopt permanent enhanced ARPA subsidies; permanently extend the
Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); require Medicaid and CHIP
to offer full benefits for pregnant and postpartum women through one
year after pregnancy; authorize Medicare to negotiate prescription drug
prices; add coverage for vision, hearing, and dental services to
Medicare; and more.
Also in the column, Keith discussed the Biden administration's work
finalizing its first full rule on Marketplace coverage, continuing to
implement the No Surprises Act, and awarding new funding for navigators
and states.
Today on Health Affairs Blog, Andrea Thoumi and coauthors discuss how
the experiences of LATIN-19-a coalition that connects Latinx
communities in North Carolina to COVID-19 resources-provide key
lessons in how to embed health equity principles
in the design of health policies.
John Lowe and coauthors discuss aspirations for America's response to
future disease outbreaks
,
and a strategy to reach them.
