Stand with Parkland has continued to engage elected leaders on both sides of the aisle with our bipartisan message of school safety.

We have been busy in Washington, D.C. advocating for critical legislation that would keep America’s staff and students safe at school.

After the tragic mass shootings this summer, we reached out to the White House to offer our help in bringing both Democrats and Republicans together to make our country safer through the passage of enhanced background checks and Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation. These policy priorities have been part of Stand with Parkland’s advocacy from the beginning.

In September, we met with members of the President's Domestic Policy Council and other administration officials to advocate for public school safety reforms : securing our nation's schools, improved mental health screening and support, and responsible firearms ownership.

We also met with officials from the Departments of Homeland Security and Education regarding their continued work on the federal clearinghouse of “best practices” for school safety.

In October, we met with members of Congress to discuss ways to improve school safety and prevent future shootings. Stand with Parkland asked Congressional members from both parties to pass the bipartisan Eagles Act and Senators from both sides of the aisle to consider voting on some of the House-passed firearms legislation, or to find a way to craft Senate bills that move those issues forward.

We would like to express our gratitude to all those who took the time to meet with us to discuss our inclusive, bipartisan, and all-encompassing school safety agenda. Thank you to Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Susan Collins (R-ME), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), as well as Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and the offices of Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), John Cornyn (R-TX), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Pat Toomey (R-PA), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Finally, we were glad to support Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) in his introduction of the TIPS Act, which directs the FBI to share threat tips it receives with local law enforcement agencies to help ensure action is taken. This is an effort to correct one of the many failures that occurred prior to the Parkland school shooting.
