Friend, before I was elected to Congress, I was a teacher -- for over 20 years.

My grandfather was an American immigrant.

And in the 1940s, my family had to start over with nothing when they were wrongfully interned in Japanese-American internment camps.

All this is to say that I’m not a typical politician. I ran for Congress because I wanted to make a real difference in working class, marginalized communities.
