Build Back Broke
Today, the House of Representatives passed President Biden’s “Build Back Better” agenda.

I won’t parse my words. This plan would be a disaster for the people of Wyoming and for people across this country. This is the largest expansion of government in modern history. President Biden and Democrats in Congress want the government to be in charge of even more parts of your life – from the daycare your child can attend to what you spend your money on.

Not only that, this plan will fundamentally change the way we power our nation. We will no longer be allowed to rely on proven fossil fuels to heat our homes and fill our gas tanks. This plan would force us to move to less reliable forms of energy that rely on materials from China to develop. It makes no allowance for the ways we’ve made fossil fuels cleaner and better for the environment. It makes no acknowledgment of the thousands of jobs that will be lost if we cut fossil fuels entirely. It ignores the people in Wyoming who will have no way to put food on the table when their good, energy sector jobs are eliminated due to politics.

This bill is good for the wealthy, coastal elites who will get a massive tax cut from the reinstatement of the State and Local tax deduction. This bill gives power to unions by subsidizing union dues with your taxpayer dollars. It increases taxes on natural gas while creating more subsidies for less reliable green energy technologies. President Biden promised no new taxes on middle class Americans, but that’s precisely what this bill is full of.

Don’t be fooled – people in Wyoming WILL pay more in taxes if this bill passes.

This bill faces an uphill battle in the split Senate, but it’s not dead yet. There are a few senators on the other side of the aisle who see this bill for what it really is – an expensive increase of government control – and hopefully they’ll oppose this huge piece of legislation.  I’ll keep fighting to make sure our way of life here in Wyoming isn’t destroyed by radical progressives.

Happy Trails,
WORKING IN WASHINGTON
  • I joined Senator John Boozman (R-AR) and my Republican colleagues in discussing the rising cost of Thanksgiving this year because of inflation. As a result of Joe Biden’s far-left priorities, inflation has reached 30-year highs and is driving up the costs of Thanksgiving staples.
Legislative Actions:
  • cosponsored Senator Daines’ (R-MT) SMART Energy Act, which supports renewable energy by requiring an onshore and offshore renewable energy strategy.
    • The new leasing ban has already cost the state millions of dollars in foregone revenues for schools, and needed services, as well as contributed to high gas prices.
  • cosigned a letter led by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) to the Secretary of Commerce, asking her to enforce regulations restricting the export of critical U.S. technologies to China because of the growing national security threat it poses to U.S. interests.
  • I cosponsored Senator John Thune’s (R-SD) American Beef Labeling Act, which would reinstate Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL) for beef.
    • Wyoming beef consumers want to know where their beef comes from, and MCOOL would ensure greater transparency for consumers.  Producers would also see an improvement in cattle markets if MCOOL were reinstated.
Committee Hearing:

Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing
Committee on Environment and Public Works Votes:
  • Cloture invoked on the motion to proceed to the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act
    • Opposed
    • There was an abundant lack of transparency in this process. The people of Wyoming deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent.
  • Robert Farrell Bonnie to be Under Secretary, Farm Production and Conservation, Department of Agriculture
    • Opposed
    • I was concerned with Mr. Bonnie’s history of considering climate-smart farming policies above all other policy issues. He recommended that the federal crop insurance program be administered with climate change in mind while serving in the Obama administration.

Media:
  • I joined the Ruthless podcast to discuss digital assets and the Biden administration’s failures.
  • I spoke with Will Silverstein at KLWY Cheyenne to discuss the Energy, Climate & Jobs Plan.
In State Focus:
  • This week, Wyoming received exciting news when TerraPower and PacifiCorp announced they will build a new nuclear reactor plant in Kemmerer. Wyoming powers the nation, and this announcement is proof that Wyoming’s spirit of innovation is helping us play a leading role in America’s continued fight for energy independence. I look forward to watching this plant come online and am proud to support Wyoming’s continued place as the number one net energy exporter in the nation.

The question of what the future of coal in Campbell County will entail long term remains unanswered. But in the near future, Powder River Basin coal is projected to do well.

Kyle Colby, general manager of Cordero Rojo mine, owned by the Navajo Transitional Energy Co., said the ongoing year of coal production has been strong, with another strong year expected ahead. But beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.

The Biden administration on Friday said it will consider new measures to protect greater sage grouse, a bird species once found across much of the U.S. West that has suffered drastic declines in recent decades due to oil and gas drilling, grazing, wildfires and other pressures.

The announcement of a range-wide evaluation of habitat plans for greater sage grouse came after the Trump administration tried to scale back conservation efforts adopted when Biden was vice president in 2015

WYOMING SHOUT OUT
A team of students from the University of Wyoming won the Carbon Removal Student Competition. The competition, funded by the Musk Foundation and XPRIZE, gave 23 student-led teams $5 million in prize money. The University of Wyoming team designed an improved carbon soil gas monitoring sensor and took home a $100,000 prize to improve their design and to incorporate it into new environments while making it more widely available.

Great job Shane, Danielle, Lander and Anna!
