In America, we’ve had a long history of restrictive voting rights. From voting rights reserved for white male landowners to modern-day voter suppression, the journey to the ballot box has been difficult.
For over 100 years, suffragettes fought for women’s right to vote, while Black and brown women were left out of early women’s suffrage. After the emancipation of enslaved peoples in 1863, Black people were barred from voting until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed. To this day, barriers to voting are still imposed on minority populations.
It’s time to live up to our name as the land of the free. It starts here in Georgia, ground zero for voter suppression.
