Our criminal justice system has failed. We have failed.

Team,

As a doctor and a medical professional, I took an oath to do no harm.

Kyle Rittenhouse was not a medical professional. He took no such oath. He lied and said he was an EMT, but he wasn’t — he was a vigilante who went out actively seeking to do harm.

In the summer of 2020, Rittenhouse illegally acquired a high-capacity rifle, crossed state lines, and shot at four people who were protesting for racial justice following the police shooting of Jacob Blake -- an unarmed Black father and fellow Wisconsinite.

That night, Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber in cold blood, while seriously injuring Gaige Grosskreutz.

Today he was found “not guilty” in a court of law.

Once again, we’ve put “gun rights” before the safety and the basic civil rights of our citizens. We’ve failed to uphold the sanctity of life.

There can be no doubt, team, our criminal justice system has failed. We have failed.

There are no soothing words or magic wands to make this right. The only thing we can do — that we must do — is come together to demand a change in our society. A change that puts our basic freedoms and rights first.

I will do my best to be a part of that change, and I hope you’ll join me.

Take a moment to watch the video of my full response here.

Thank you,

- Dr. Gillian Battino
