Today, I want to talk about the Build Back Better legislation that recently passed through the House.
I was proud to support this legislation that makes historic investments in Maryland’s working families, lifting up everyone -- not just those at the very top.
Seriously -- just take a look at what’s included:
-
Extends the Child Tax Credit, covering 90% of American children and lifting millions out of poverty
-
Lowers the cost of prescription drugs and expands Medicaid and affordable health care
-
Provides universal preschool and lowers the cost of child care for families
-
Establishes national paid family and medical leave
-
Invests in more affordable housing
-
Expands Social Security benefits for seniors and disabled workers

I am particularly proud that this bill makes the biggest investments in climate action ever in U.S. history.
The Build Back Better legislation will jump-start our country’s transition to a clean-energy economy and create good-paying jobs while cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing pollution.
And it couldn’t have arrived at a more critical moment as extreme weather events become more frequent and more intense. Maryland recently received disaster relief to rebuild from Hurricane Ida, which caused tornadoes and flash flooding in several counties in Maryland, damaging nearly 200 homes and businesses across the state.
The climate provisions in this legislation meet the moment and treat the climate crisis with the seriousness it demands.
I want to hear your thoughts on this plan. Will you take a minute to respond to our one-question survey and tell me which of these provisions is most important to you?
Your friend,
Dutch
