MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Giving Tuesday this year is on November 30th!
In over a year of uncertainty, loss, and hardship we survived, and we did it TOGETHER. Thanks to you, Border Angels was able to continue its life-saving work in San Diego and Tijuana. Help us help others and consider donating to us this Giving Tuesday. Stay tuned for more information on how to give!

WELCOME JOAQUIN!

The Latest at Migrant Camp El Chaparral:
In Tijuana the El Chaparral encampment has now been taken over and enclosed with a chain-link fence by Mexican authorities. They have also put an ID system in place, those currently residing in the encampment must obtain and present their identification. The authorities implemented this system under the guise that meals would be provided for those who had identification, never telling them it would be used to have access to come in and out of El Chaparral.

Members of the El Chaparral Alliance and other community organizations had a difficult time going into the encampment. Once inside, they were able to speak to some of the migrants and get their testimonies. We learned that while enclosing the encampment many of the tents were marked with a “D” for desocupado (unoccupied) and were thrown out, many with their belongings there inside. The majority of these folks were at work, and upon returning to the encampment realized their living spaces no longer existed, many tents were thrown out with important documents and with new items and donations that El Chaparral Alliance had just delivered. Those donations include jackets, blankets, sleeping bags, and much more.

All of the enclosing and emptying of the encampment was done at night time, with Mexican authorities not allowing media to go inside and document what was happening. Many officers also refused to give their names or identify themselves.
We are taking all the necessary steps to repair and improve the living spaces of all our supported shelters in Tijuana. Thanks to your continued support we have helped Ejercito de Salvacion repaint their shelter! Ejercito has been instrumental in not only caring for the migrants they house but delivering meals and hope to all the migrant families at El Chaparral!

11/06/21 Water Drop

As the weather continues to be mild, we continue our longer treks in the desert. The weather is not too extreme in the desert right now, but still warm. We also hiked and left supplies in the mountains, where we left a mixture of supplies for warm weather (it was still in the 80s) and cold supplies (the temps get down in the 40s). Monitoring these fluctuating temperatures, along with locations of our drop sites determine which supplies we leave at each site.
Until further notice, we are still not taking any new volunteers. Click here to donate ([link removed]) 💧
GREEN CARDS FOR KIDS UPDATE:
We are excited to announce that we have added three new cases to our Green Cards for Kids program. We have been able to take on more cases now that we have a second attorney for this program and are looking forward to starting Special Immigrant Juvenile Status proceedings with the hopes of securing legal permanent residency for these kids.

We want to thank Fabiola Navarro and Maricela Amezola for their tireless legal work as well as care and compassion they put into every case.

Donate here ([link removed]) & help more kids get permanent residency!
We want to thank everyone who donated, attended, and participated in our 100th Bond Celebration, our first in-person event in almost two years! Attendance included: board president Luis Aragon, executive director Dulce Garcia, Water Drop directors James Cordero and Jacqueline Arellano, Green Cards for Kids attorney Fabiola Navarro, and so many more! We are also grateful to our fabulous hosts at Mujeres Brewhouse.

We would like to take the time to shout out local attorney and friend Jose Orozco whose donation ensured us reaching our goal of collecting enough funds to post one full bond!

We look forward to hosting more events with the proper safety precautions in the future.

IN MEMORIAM
Last week, our Border Angels team visited Terrace Parl Cemetery in Holtville, CA for the county's Indigent Burial Ceremony. We are grateful to have been part of honoring the lives of those who have passed on and had no means of paying for a burial service, whose remains have been unidentified, or who have perished in the desert.

This cemetery holds a special place in all of our hearts the unmarked dirt lot at the end of Terrace Park Cemetery in Holtville houses the remains of hundreds of unidentified migrants. Most of these people died alone in the Imperial Valley desert or mountains. Some drowned in irrigation canals. Others died of thirst or exposure to extreme heat. Each burial site is marked only with a large brick, each inscribed with the words “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” and a row number.

While visiting Holtville, our team also had the opportunity to visit the site of the tragic accident that took place earlier this year, where a suspected Border Patrol chase ended in 13 people losing their lives.
It is important for all of us to pay respect and honor these spaces for those who have lost their lives in search of a better one. Every single one of these people deserves a dignified resting place, even though we may never know exactly who they were.
TRUTH Act Forum:
Members of SDIRC, UUSDV, APALA-SD, AFSC, JFS, Border Angels and so many more were present at Tuesday's TRUTH Act Forum to oppose the Sheriff's collaboration and entanglement with ICE in our communities. It is important to make our voices heard and hold our law enforcement agencies accountable for public safety. The collaboration between ICE and the Sheriff threatens the spirit of SB-54 (ensures that no state and local resources are used to assist federal immigration enforcement and that our schools, our hospitals, and our courthouses are safe spaces for everyone in our community), separates families, and further grows our community's fear of law enforcement forcing them to not call 911 or report crimes.

We will continue to show up and organize until the demands set by SDIRC are met: Sheriff stop allowing ICE access to county facilities End all transfers and notifications to ICE Stop sharing and receiving resources from DHS agencies. For full testimonies and presentations in the Board of Supervisors Meeting visit the county

ON VETERAN'S DAY:

Once again, Border Angels recognizes this holiday and asks for support of deported veterans. Today we remember all of those who have served in defended our country, only to be told they have no place in it. Border Angels urges all of you to call your congressional representatives and urge them to support deported veterans. We also use this time to highlight the work of our partner organizations Unified U.S. Deported Veterans Resource Center and our friend and colleague Robert Viviar. Rober Vivar has finally been able to return to the U.S.!

Their work in support of deported veterans and families is tireless, and without them we would not have been able to assist the case of deported ARMY mother Rocio Rebollar. UUSDVRC also forms part of El Chaparral Alliance, assisting thousands of our migrant families at the El Chaparral Encampment.
To learn more about the important work of this organization, you can visit the link in bio and check out the past talk and presentation on U.S Deported Veterans and Families.

Advocates ask San Diego district attorney to charge Border Patrol agents in alleged cover up
The widow of Anastasio Hernández Rojas, joined by advocates, Thursday called on San Diego’s district attorney to investigate a group of Border Patrol agents and charge them with obstructing justice in the case over her husband’s killing.

The demand comes after a letter sent to Congress last week called for an investigation into special Border Patrol units whose role, according to agency documents, is to mitigate officials’ liability. The letter alleged that the San Diego unit covered up what really happened when Hernández Rojas was killed by officials at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in 2010, and that similar units are operating all along the border.

“We know that anybody else, any other individual would have faced prosecution for things such as altering documents, for getting rid of evidence, for talking to witnesses and not providing testimony to any other agencies,” said Dulce Garcia, executive director of Border Angels and chair of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, one of the groups supporting Puga.

Thank you SDIRC for leading this effort!
