The Migration Policy Institute

November 19, 2021

Dear John xxxxxx,

It has been a big week at MPI! We were delighted to commemorate the institute’s 20th Anniversary with a high-profile conference, Migration & Humanitarian Protection in a Rapidly Evolving World.

In a blue-sky conversation, the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, António Vitorino, and MPI co-founder and President Emeritus Demetrios Papademetriou discussed migration during—and after—COVID-19 and the pandemic’s effects on labor shortages. They also tackled the evolution of migration trends and policies over the past two decades and the growing focus on climate migration. The conversation was moderated by Meghan Benton, Director of Research for MPI's International Program.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi engaged in a discussion with MPI co-founder and Senior Fellow Kathleen Newland and Kids in Need of Defense President Wendy Young about the state of the humanitarian protection system and key challenges as some governments harden their asylum and refugee policies. The panel was moderated by MPI Senior Policy Analyst Essey Workie.

You can find videos for both conversations here: www.migrationpolicy.org/events/20th-anniversary-conference-migration.
