Dear Friend,

We know there are many problems with the criminal legal system. From law enforcement disproportionately targeting communities of color to the lack of accountability for police and prosecutors. Additionally, police officers often wrongfully arrest victims of crime. What if it wasn't your choice to commit a crime? What if you were forced or coerced to do so? This is the sad reality for many survivors of human trafficking.

Human trafficking survivors are often left with criminal records from crimes they were forced to commit by their traffickers. These records hold survivors back. Having a record impacts their ability to find a job, obtain housing, access benefits and financial assistance, apply for immigration relief, and more. It also acts as a constant reminder of their trafficking experience. Survivors often carry trauma and shame from having a criminal record, affecting their ability to reconnect with family and friends or seek support.

Luckily, there is help available. FNUSA’s Survivor Reentry Project connects survivors with pro bono legal representation to try to clear the criminal records that were the result of their trafficking experience. Survivors and service providers rely on the Survivor Reentry Project for critical assistance with analyzing criminal records, creating a strategy for clearing eligible offenses, and expanding access to criminal record relief. Most survivors have convictions in multiple states, so we work nationally to provide training, technical assistance, and legislative expertise.

In the two years since the project came to FNUSA, we’ve received over 80 requests from survivors looking for help with their records. But we know this is just the tip of the iceberg. We need your help to assist even more survivors. A donation today can help us expand our services and national advocacy.

Survivors have already been victimized by their traffickers. They don’t need to continue to be victimized by the criminal legal system too. Help survivors clear their criminal records. Donate today ([link removed]) .
In partnership,
