$5B for Community Violence Intervention is one step closer to being a reality.

Hey John,
The House of Representatives just passed the roughly $2 trillion Build Back Better Act. In other words, the House of Representatives just passed a $5B budget for Community Violence Intervention, a huge investment in solutions that end gun violence.
This piece of legislation is not only long overdue, it has the potential to be life saving. While our communities continue to be plagued by gun violence, this bill includes funding to support programs for survivors, families, and those harmed by gun violence (especially Black and brown communities, which are disproportionately affected). Congress passing this bill is a huge sign of promise for our movement.
Now, the fight to save lives continues on to the Senate. We are so close, but we must mobilize the full force of this movement to make sure the Senate hears our voices. Young people can’t keep waiting for change.

This is more than just a short term win. The inclusion of Community Violence Intervention programs in the Build Back Better Act is a sign that Biden recognizes the direct tie between community gun violence and the economic health of the country -- specifically, the $280B burden of gun violence [[link removed]] on the US economy. This funding will go to evidence-based strategies which focus on housing, job creation, crisis management, and other community-led programs to support people at the greatest risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence.
For the first time, our representatives are investing in life, rather than paying the price of death. We’ve said, time and time again, that gun control by itself will not stop this crisis. We’ve called out our government’s pattern of pulling people out of the river without looking upstream to see why they fell in.
In talks with the Biden Administration earlier this year, we made it clear that the work to combat gun violence starts with preventing it from happening in the first place; by liberating ourselves from its root causes and eradicating it completely. We called on the President to “put forward a national, unified plan that includes at least $1B in funding for research and community-based violence intervention programming.” Our voices are being heard, loud and clear.
Now, we can leave no room for error. We NEED this bill to pass the Senate. And that will require us to mass-mobilize young people to make our voices heard. Can you donate a few dollars to help us keep the momentum going? If everyone on our email list pitches in, we’ll be able to mobilize thousands of young people nationwide in support of this and other lifesaving measures.

John, this movement wouldn’t be what it is without your support. This is a win for all of us -- including you! It shouldn’t have to be such an uphill climb when so many lives are at stake, but working against corruption in government is how March For Our Lives started. We’re not going to back down. Now let’s go get this passed in the Senate.
Onward,
Max Markham
