Althea Gibson was the first African-American to win a Grand Slam championship in tennis. Reflecting on her career, she said “no matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you.”

That’s true whether making history on the tennis court, or in an election for U.S. Senate.

No one person can get elected to the Senate all by themselves — and especially not one hoping to become only the third African-American woman ever elected to the chamber.
