Hey, Steve here! We just received a surprise TRIPLE match courtesy of the Manitou Fund - now, when you give before MIDNIGHT tonight, all donations will be TRIPLED to protect the Boundary Waters for Give to the Max Day! Can you chip in? Many of you know my story by now — my wife Nancy and I have been here in Ely, Minnesota since 1979, and we founded a little wilderness shop on main street. We took our first trip to the Boundary Waters and soon made the easy decision to spend the rest of our lives here.
What my family and many other business owners are worried about is the immense threat posed by proposed sulfide-ore copper mining next to the Boundary Waters.
This type of mining is extremely toxic, and would devastate the Boundary Waters. Because of the Boundary Waters’ interconnected groundwater, wetlands, and abundant lakes and streams, the area is especially vulnerable to pollution. For years, mining interests have been vying to set up shop just on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. President Biden’s recent action helped stall the immediate threat, but two mining leases owned by the company Twin Metals Minnesota, a subsidiary of a Chilean mining conglomerate, Antofagasta, still loom. Which is why we must keep fighting for permanent protection of the Boundary Waters and its watershed.
Some places are just too important -- we can’t allow the most toxic industry in the United States next to the most-visited Wilderness
We rely on the generosity of people like you to do this vital work to permanently protect the Boundary Waters. Thanks to the Manitou Fund and the Walter Mondale Legacy Fund every dollar you give is tripled for the Wilderness when you donate before midnight. Make a gift today. Steve Piragis
