This week is Transgender Awareness Week and Saturday, November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance. This is a moment where we honor the memory of the transgender and nonbinary lives we have lost to violence.
At The Trevor Project, we show up for transgender and all LGBTQ young people who are struggling, regardless of the day, so we can build a safer, more inclusive future together. Healing from discrimination and trauma includes being there for one another, and investing in the transgender community of tomorrow.
Part of our investment is educating our community. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we want to remind you all about the introductory educational resource we created that covers topics and best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary young people. The guide includes topics from the basics of gender — identity, expression, and perception to common mistakes and what to do if you’ve made one. Part of being a good ally is continuing your education, and on days like today, we’re reminded that education can be a powerful tool.

** Acceptance of Transgender and Nonbinary Youth from Adults and Peers Associated with Significantly Lower Rates of Attempting Suicide
------------------------------------------------------------
Our research team has published a new peer-reviewed study in Transgender Health that found acceptance of one’s gender identity from adults and peers was associated with significantly lower odds of attempting suicide among transgender and nonbinary youth. Our research shows a need to equip adults and young people with the information, skills, and resources necessary to support and affirm the transgender and nonbinary young people in their lives, as this gender identity acceptance can protect against negative mental health outcomes, including suicide.
“The findings of this study are clear: transgender and nonbinary young people who feel accepted by the people in their lives, are less likely to attempt suicide,” said Dr. Myeshia Price (she/her or they/them pronouns), Senior Research Scientist at The Trevor Project.

The Trevor Project Artist Spotlight: Julia Kaye
------------------------------------------------------------
We wanted to create a series of comic strips that illustrate The Trevor Project’s free and confidential crisis services — TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, TrevorText — as well as TrevorSpace, the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ young people.
We found an amazing award-winning cartoonist to help us achieve our goals: Julia (she/her). Her impactful imagery depicts the nuanced set of challenges that LGBTQ youth face on a daily basis and shows them that they are loved, supported, and never alone.
Julia’s signature autobiographical style lets audiences into her innermost thoughts — from moments of insecurity and dysphoria, to feelings of confidence and optimism, no emotion is left unexplored. Through candor, vulnerability, and humor, Julia’s art normalizes the everyday trans experience to help create a safer, more inclusive world for LGBTQ young people.
