Hi John -- I'd like to take a few minutes of your day to explain why Kara Hahn is the right person to represent us in Congress.
A great example of Kara's values in practice is her work tackling the opioid epidemic on Long Island in her decade as a county legislator.
Back in 2012, Kara passed legislation to equip police officers with NARCAN nasal spray and train residents to carry and use it to save lives. These efforts were a resounding success, and lives were saved within days of the program's launch.
Kara didn't stop there, she then passed legislation that would ensure those saved would receive outreach about their treatment options. Next, knowing that addiction often starts after a sports injury, Kara helped write a curriculum for athletic coaches to be trained to identify and intervene upon seeing the signs and symptoms of addiction. In addition, as a daughter of a first responder, she fought for and secured funding for compassion fatigue training for EMTs, paramedics and other ambulance workers who face the trauma of overdoses almost daily.
Now, after nearly a decade championing the fight, she hasn't given up. Just this week, she passed bills that ensure that the millions of dollars worth of opioid settlement money Suffolk County is set to receive will be used solely to fight the substance abuse crisis.
You see, when Kara takes on an issue, she sees it through. That's a testament to her grit as a legislator and compassion as a community member, and that's exactly the kind of leader this district deserves representing them in Congress.
