In case you haven’t heard yet, John, Facebook is officially changing its name to Meta as they venture into the virtual reality space (because that’s just what would make this pandemic better right? Virtual reality meetings).  

No matter how many name changes Facebook goes through they can’t erase their dirty laundry. Here’s three key things to know about the Big Tech company that we’ve learned straight from the mouth of whistleblowers:

1️⃣ Facebook has known about human traffickers using its platform since 2018 but is still struggling to crack down on related content.

2️⃣ Facebook knows that its platform Instagram has a hugely negative effect on teens but they still target that audience. Internal Facebook research shows that 1 in 3 teen girls say that it makes their body image worse. 17% say that it makes eating issues like anorexia worse. 

3️⃣ Internal documents have shown that Facebook has known that its strategies were insufficient to combat the spread of posts calling for violence in countries at risk of violence like Ethiopia. 

We need folks in Congress who are willing to break up these conglomerates. Morgan is that person. She’s not afraid to take a stance on tech and regulate it. She’s been pushing back since she worked at the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) and testified in Congress about breaking up Big Tech companies like Facebook.
