Hi John - A child walking past a roadside grave and hoping he doesn’t end up buried in one. A teenager wiping tears from his eyes as he presses onward, knowing that quitting is not an option. A kid foraging for food and drinking water from puddles. Stories like these in a recent New York Times article break my heart and make me angry that any child should experience these traumas.[1] When they arrive in the U.S., they are often detained in dirty and unwelcoming detention centers, lacking access to basic essentials like nutritious food and medicine. Please urge Congress to put an end to this inhumane treatment by supporting the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act (S. 2113 | H.R. 3918). The New York Times reported this week that a record number of unaccompanied minors have been apprehended at the U.S. southern border – more than 76,000 in the last fiscal year. These children make this dangerous journey north because they know that their chances of survival are much worse if they stay in their home countries that are plagued by crime, gang violence and inescapable poverty. In a clear violation of international law and common decency, the U.S. government held children in detention facilities in record numbers and far beyond the maximum 20 days allowed under current regulations. We need your help in putting a stop to this. Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor and pass the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act (S. 2113 | H.R. 3918). This legislation will ensure that conditions for children detained at the border meet basic standards for hygiene and safety. It strengthens their rights for due process and a speedy and fair resolution of their asylum claim. And for children who are apprehended with their parents, it keeps families together. Escaping violence and seeking asylum is not a crime. It is long past time for us to return to our values of providing people seeking asylum in the U.S. – especially children – with decent conditions and a quick and just resolution to their asylum cases. Please contact Congress today and ask that they support the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
