Washington Update Alaskans,As you know, our seafood industry is a critical component of our state’s economy. Recreational and subsistence fishing are also a central part of the Alaskan way of life. One of the most important bills I passed in my career was the Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), which I drafted with my good friend, the late Senator Ted Stevens. The truth is, MSA has worked and worked well. Because of it, our fishing fleets have been able to access healthy waters and strong fish stocks.Click here or on the image above to watch.MSA must be reauthorized, and I continue working diligently to move a bipartisan reauthorization bill to the House Floor. This week, I co-led a hearing of the Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, which featured testimony on my MSA reauthorization bill and that of my colleague, Congressman Jared Huffman. This hearing was one of contrasts. While I respect Congressman Huffman, our two MSA bills have some very big differences. As written, his bill has the potential to take power away from the Fishery Management Councils and hand it over to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, which is a politically appointed position.
