Since the 2020 election Republicans have been using Donald Trump's Big Lie as justification to push draconian voter suppression laws in states across America — endangering our voting rights in 2022 and beyond.

The Senate could protect our democracy and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. But, Republicans are determined to block this popular legislation by resorting to the antiquated and undemocratic Senate filibuster procedure — which is nowhere to be found in the Constitution. It is simply being used to subvert the will of the American people.

By its very nature, the filibuster reinforces the already existing anti-democratic structure of the U.S. Senate — where every state receives TWO votes regardless of the size of its population. Functionally, it allows powerful interest groups to block important new initiatives favored by a large majority of the voting population.

In the case of voting rights the filibuster is blocking legislation required to ensure that every eligible voter can participate in our democracy under the American promise of "one person, one vote".
