Porker of the Month: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
Watch CAGW's October Porker of the Month Video
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Porker of the Month for pushing a partisan drug pricing bill that would implement innovation-killing price controls. Speaker Pelosi claims that H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, would “lower the cost of healthcare” by giving the government the power to “negotiate” drug prices. The truth is that the Speaker’s drug deal imposes extortionate penalties and mandates on pharmaceutical companies that would devaste their ability to research and develop new life-saving drugs. As seen in other countries, price controls thwart the introduction of new medicines to tackle serious diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. For championing a plan that puts America’s pharmaceutical innovation at risk, Speaker Pelosi is the October Porker of the Month. Read more about the Porker of the Month.
CAGW Goes Trick-or-Treating
Just in time for Halloween, CAGW has released its 19th annual compilation of scary, surreal, and spine-tingling tricks and treats for taxpayers. This year’s treats include President Trump’s Executive Order to stop shadowy agencies from using regulations to punish families and small businesses, and the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement that, if passed, would add $68.2 billion to the U.S. economy. Taxpayer tricks include the continuing horror story of the growing national debt, currently just shy of $23 trillion, and the bloodcurdling losses by the Postal Service that now total more than $70 billion. Read the full list of tricks and treats that the federal government has handed out to taxpayers in 2019.
CAGW Releases Prime Cuts 2019
CAGW this month released Prime Cuts 2019, the latest edition of its compilation of waste-cutting recommendations that would pare down the bloated federal government by eliminating unnecessary, obsolete, and ineffective federal programs. Prime Cuts 2019 includes 620 recommendations that, if enacted, would save $433.8 billion in the first year and $3.9 trillion over five years. The commonsense waste cuts include proposals like ending outdated sugar, dairy, and peanut subsidies and selling excess federal property. There are no “sacred cows” in Prime Cuts 2019, including the Department of Defense. Reforms like eliminating congressional earmarks for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter would save taxpayers billions and free up funds to go to genuine national security priorities. CAGW’s Tom Schatz Testifies before Senate Committee
On October 17, CAGW President Tom Schatz testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government regarding the importance of access to wireless spectrum. The testimony addressed why the deployment of 5G wireless broadband using mid-band spectrum is vitally important to ensuring that the U.S. stays ahead of nations like China in global technology leadership and how deploying these new technologies can promote economic growth and job creation.
