Dear John,

My name is Hamimu Masudi and I’m Health Poverty Action’s Policy and Campaigns Officer in East Africa. I advocate for the rights of the communities we work with and campaign on issues affecting health and poverty globally.

From historic colonialism, to injustices in tax, trade, and drug policies, the exploitation of the Global South by the Global North has a long legacy. The rest of the world extracts six times the resources from countries in Africa than that which it gives through aid.

Yet language used to discuss ‘aid’ and ‘international development’ often presents citizens of the Global North as the generous saviours of the Global South, masking these ongoing abuses of power

Health Poverty Action is proud to be part the Kampala Initiative, [[link removed]] a community of over 80 independent, critical-thinking activists and over 90 organizations organizations from the Global South and North which aims to decolonize aid and promote global solidarity.

With growing understanding that the language we use affects how we think, feel and act [[link removed]], and consensus on the need to decolonize the language of so called ‘international development’, we are delighted to invite you to our global webinar: ‘Reimagining solidarity: how can we move beyond the aid narrative’, November 30, 15.30 GMT [[link removed]]

Our fantastic panel includes, Tammam Aloudat [[link removed]],  Global Health Center of the Graduate Institute in Geneva, who has written [[link removed]] extensively on this issue; Dr Danny Gotto, of Innovations for Change Uganda [[link removed]]; Maryam Mohsin, Head of Media of Bond [[link removed]], the UK network for organisations working in international development and Joan Okitoi [[link removed]], co-host of #GlobalDev Communicators Connect and Healing Solidarity Collective.
