Dear Ward 8 Residents:

It is that time of year again for my office to continue the holiday tradition of hosting the annual Ward 8 Wide Turkey Giveaway. This event will provide a turkey to 2,500 families this Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, November 23rd, Ward 8 residents will attend one of the designated host sites for a turkey. Register now to one of our distribution locations below:

We want to ensure that Ward 8 families in need enjoy a wholesome meal over the Thanksgiving holiday. If you need a turkey this Thanksgiving, please register in advance at one of the locations above.

To participate in this event:
* Must be a Ward 8 resident
* Provide ID and proof of residency
* One turkey per household. If a duplicate registration is identified, both tickets will be cancelled.

What if I am not a Ward 8 resident, can I still register?

We wish we could serve everyone, however, this event is for Ward 8 residents only. If there are turkeys remaining following the event, it will be at the discretion of the host site to provide extra giveaways to those in need.


What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

All sites are metro accessible. Most sites have parking lots. Sites without parking lots have street parking.


How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Do I have to print my ticket to bring to the event?
No. Be sure to have identification and we can look you up online. You will also beable to retrieve your ticket using your mobile device.


Can I update my registration information?

Please be sure to register at the location that is most convenient for you. You will not be able to edit your pick-up site once your registration is complete.


Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Your registration is NON-transferrable. If someone will pick-up for you, please register under their name. If they are not a ward 8 resident, you may send a utility bill or a copy of your ID as proof of residency. PLEASE NOTE: Each person may only pick-up one turkey. There is a limit of one turkey per household.


Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

NO. The name on the registration MUST match the ID shown to collect the turkey.

** MLK Gateway Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Monday, November 15th, Councilmember Trayon White, joined by Mayor Muriel Bowser and other city officials in celebrating the two significant milestones for MLK Gateway: the ribbon cutting of its completion of the first phase and the groundbreaking of its second phase.

Councilmember White's opening address discussed continuing to maintain the affordability for Ward 8 residents. He also discussed the importance of allowing current residents the ability to enjoy the new amenities and ways to combat development that will not drive residents out.


** The William O. Lockridge Community Foundation Celebrates Its 11th Year of Dancing With The Scholars.

On Saturday, November 13th, the William O. Lockridge Community Foundation ([link removed]) celebrated its 11th year of its signature fundraising event of Dancing With The Scholars to raise academic scholarships for Wards 7 & 8 scholars.

Councilmember Trayon White joined as the event's 5-time reigning judge alongside guest judges and Council colleagues, Chairman Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Vincent C. Gray. Mayor Muriel Bowser joined as the event's guest speaker.

It was a fantastic evening filled with dancing, entertainment by Bela Dona Band, opera, violist and more. Congratulations to all the scholars & SBOE representatives that took to the stage.

And special congratulations to Councilmember Trayon White's Chief of Staff, Wanda Lockridge, for her fantastic work, leadership, and continuing the legacy and contributions of the late and great Mr. William O. Lockridge.


** Good Food Markets Opens In Ward 8!

We did it, Ward 8! We have another grocery store in the community. On Saturday, November 13th, Councilmember Trayon White joined city officials and residents for the grand opening of Good Food Markets.

"On January 3rd, 2021, we broke ground to plant the seed for what would become Good Food Markets. I am proud to announce the new grocery store in the Bellevue community of Ward 8 on the corner of South Capitol & Atlantic Streets SW," Councilmember White wrote in a Facebook post about the event.

"On this corner was once a liquor store. Today, the foundation of that soil is providing the community access to healthy food options. Ward 8 deserves the amenities available to other Washingtonians throughout our city. I'm proud to see this project come to fruition. Thank you to everyone that supported this vision, that marched in the Grocery Walk that seemed so long ago," read the Facebook post.

Councilmember Trayon White introduced B23-0131 - Ward 7 and Ward 8 Restaurant Incentive Program Establishment Act of 2019 ([link removed]) that included language that would require The Department of Small and Local Business Development to establish the Ward 7 and Ward 8 Restaurant Incentive Program. This program would seek to attract sit-down restaurants and other food businesses to underserved retail corridors in Ward 7 and Ward 8 and provide the companies with start-up grants and loan financing to develop 37 new restaurants.

This is only the beginning of significant changes that are coming to Ward 8 under the leadership of Councilmember Trayon White.
