Equal Pay Day 2021 

 
Today is Equal Pay Day. The day when women effectively stop earning, relative to men, because of the gender pay gap. 

As part of this year's campaign, we are calling on employers to take the End Salary History pledge: stop asking new recruits how much they were paid in their last jobs.

Our latest research, published today, explores what people think about salary history: 

➡️ 61% women who have been asked about salary history say it damaged their confidence to negotiate for better pay
➡️ 58% of women said it made them feel like their low past salary was coming back to haunt them
➡️ Just a quarter (24%) of people feel that pay should be based on past salary, compared to 80% for their skill and responsibilities and 77% for the value of the work they do.

There is clear evidence to show that ending the recruitment practice works to tackle pay inequality - it is a simple, low-cost step that organisations can take to close their gender pay gap. You can find out more in our End Salary History briefing 👇

This Equal Pay Day, we are calling on employers to take the End Salary History pledge: stop asking new recruits how much they were paid in their last jobs.

We need your support to make this happen and we've created some simple tools to help your online campaigning: 

➡️ Join our social media action today at 1.30pm
Tell us why you think employers should #EndSalaryHistory. You can use our suggested posts here or write your own.

➡️ If you employ people (whether it is 1,100 or more!) you can take the #EndSalaryHistory pledge

➡️ Use your consumer power! Write to businesses you buy from or those in your networks asking them to take the #EndSalaryHistory pledge, using our template email.

➡️ Start the conversation in your organisation – use this toolkit created by Fawcett East London to see how you can start a conversation about pay in your workplace. You can do this as an employee, a trustee or a union representative.
 
Whilst ending salary history won't end the gender pay gap on its own, it will make a real difference to tackle gender inequality. You, our wonderful supporters, can help us make this change! ✊

The End Salary History campaign was started by Fawcett East London, one of 21 local Fawcett Society groups.

Fawcett East London is run by a team of incredible volunteers who have worked tirelessly to bring this campaign to life, following discussions at one of their meetings about the recruitment practices that made them angry. Without them, this campaign wouldn't be happening.
