Having fair districts from which to elect representation is square one in the battle for election integrity, and the maps being proposed today will last for the next 10 years. Join us in advocating for maps that are fair based on geography and population to ensure that every citizen has a voice. Today, November 18, is the last opportunity to provide live public comment in Ann Arbor (In-person and virtual meeting details) on the draft maps before the finalization process begins. If you are able to attend and speak, please do so. Once the finalization process begins, there will be 45 days for public review and comment, followed by a final adoption meeting at the end of the month. Due to the holidays, there are only a few opportunities to speak on the final maps (starting December 2), and during this phase, the maps are not anticipated to change substantially. Your action today is vital. You can help by giving live public comment, or by reviewing the maps online and submitting written public comment. To provide written comments, please select a map below and then stick a red pin in the map to express your thoughts via written comment: U.S. Congressional State House State Senate Points to Consider: Rural communities should not be divided and apportioned among urban areas. They are not mutual communities of interest, and if the maps are finalized in their current form, rural communities will lose their voice. Communities of interest should maintain geographic boundaries and county lines as much as possible. Some of the proposed districts stretch from Michigan’s western border to Michigan’s eastern border. These broad districts disenfranchise many people who live in rural areas and create an undue burden on elected officials. No county should be represented by more than two State Representatives. Many counties across the state will be represented by 4 different state representatives, each of whom will represent multiple counties. These representatives will not be able to do justice to any single community if these maps are passed as presented. The Michigan Constitution requires that communities of interest be based on geographic, cultural, historic, and economic factors, and must reflect population demographics. The Commission cannot lawfully consider “political fairness” or party affiliation of a region as a factor. *Please use the above points only as a guide and use your own words to advocate in accordance with your own convictions. Your action in the next 24 hours can make a HUGE difference in the final maps that. Please take action now, and ask other engaged citizens to do to the same. When giving written comment or speaking to the Commission, remember that this a not a Republican or Democrat battle, so please don't make it one. Avoid wearing any politically/slanted apparel or identifying your party if you are speaking in person.
