A few years ago, I was full of despair, feeling hopeless about our democracy. Why weren’t more people voting? What could I possibly do to effect change?
When I learned about Vote Forward, I was cautiously optimistic. Democracy is all about sharing ideas in the context of community, and writing letters to my fellow citizens seemed like such a good idea.
I signed up and started writing.
Motivated, I began hosting house parties to get others to write, too. Everything about Vote Forward worked for me—participating from home, the flexible time commitment, and sharing my passion for voting.
In March of 2020, I joined Vote Forward’s Help Desk team. The inspiration I feel from this community of letter writers has literally rescued me from the despair I’d been feeling. The time I spend helping other volunteers navigate Vote Forward’s website and letter writing process are some of my favorite hours of my week. I get to hear from so many of you who not only care deeply about our democracy, but want to do something to preserve and strengthen it.
Recently, after a detailed and peer-reviewed analysis, Vote Forward announced that, even in a noisy presidential election year, our letters helped turn out voters in crucial elections all over the country. This confirmation of positive results sealed my commitment.
To continue the work of strengthening our democracy, Vote Forward is going even bigger for the 2022 midterms—running more experimental campaigns, sending more letters, and reaching more potential voters in underrepresented communities.
