Any 988 planning must include the needs of those with SMI Hello John, All too often, our crisis response system fails the most vulnerable among us. At least 1 in 4 fatal law enforcement encounters involves an individual with serious mental illness. 988, a new three-digit number for mental health, substance use and suicidal crises, goes live nationwide in July 2022. While this easy-to-remember number is an important start, it will take federal and state action to create and fund crisis response systems in every community. Use our form to ask your members of Congress to help transform crisis response nationwide by cosponsoring The Behavioral Health Crisis Services Expansion Act (S 1902/HR 5611). Customize our sample message with your family’s personal story of interacting with crisis services. TAKE ACTION The Behavioral Health Crisis Services Expansion Act (S 1902/HR 5611) would overhaul our nation’s current approach to responding to mental health crises by expanding the availability of behavioral health crisis services, including robust mobile crisis and 24/7 crisis stabilization services, and by providing coverage of these services in the vast majority of health insurance plans. Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of those with severe mental illness.
