Today’s Economic Democracy Weekly examines systems change work at the community level. We start in “Oaxxanda”—a Black artist collective in Oakland, California that is disrupting gentrification. In our ongoing community development leaders of color series, Dr. Akilah Watkins of the Center for Community Progress looks at changing mortgage policies to narrow the racial homeownership gap. A third article highlights a Massachusetts effort to take digital a regional alternative currency and in so doing expand community control of the local economy. Lastly, we feature a webinar in which a co-op developer, a community organizer, and a systems-change strategist discuss the intricacies, complications, and joys of community-based, systems-change work.
