Friend, Monday, when we protested against dangerous legislation to allow anyone to carry a concealed firearm without a safety check, pro-gun extremists tried to drown us out. They screamed "USA! USA!" and set off car alarms in counter-protest. This disrespect was hurled at two survivors of gun violence as they told their stories while choking back tears. They verbally attacked a U.S. Army veteran as she denounced permitless concealed carry while holding her two-month old baby. And they berated a Reverend as she was forced to raise her voice over them to remind us of our moral imperative to save lives. We wouldn’t be silenced. Our chants were louder. Our message was stronger. But this reprehensible behavior was a reminder of what’s at stake and why I’m in this fight. If you want to make sure the voices of survivors are never shut down, then stand with me. Donate today so the voices of our movement can grow. Despite our peaceful protest by advocates who refused to be silenced or deterred, and the thousands of Pennsylvanians -- including law enforcement leaders -- who have voiced their clear opposition to permitless concealed carry, the General Assembly passed it Tuesday evening. Over the course of 6 hours on two days, our state Representatives from across the Commonwealth spoke up for each of us. They were the storytellers for constituents who’ve died from gun violence and those still grieving, such as Representative Bullock who was quieted by the Speaker of the House after reaching the sixth name on the list of gun homicide victims. They were the advocates for evidence-based solutions during the floor debate, like Rep. O'Mara who proposed an amendment to prevent suicide. Each time, process and procedure was used to halt any discussion -- let alone a vote. Their voices were cut short, but never silenced, as the baton passed to another legislator who fought for a Pennsylvania free from gun violence. The majority of the General Assembly cast their lot with extremists who peddle in threats and intimidation, rather than with the safety of our communities. We did not win the day, but we did have an impact, as Republicans joined our cause and past supporters of permitless carry changed their position. I know what we’re up against. I know the power in a voice that will not be silenced. And with your support, it will continue to grow louder. Yesterday clarified for me what we’re up against. It also energized me to keep fighting and ensure that no gun safety advocate is ever silenced. Thank you for being in this fight, Josh Fleitman Western Pennsylvania Manager - CeaseFirePA |
