I wanted you to be one of the first to hear that I am running for New York State’s 24th Assembly District, which includes the Queens’ neighborhoods of Jamaica, Jamaica Estates, Holliswood, Hollis Hills, Glen Oaks, Oakland Gardens, Briarwood, and Richmond Hill.
I’m running because, as a first generation American, US Marine Corps veteran, and public school educator, my story is the story of Queens and this community. For years, I watched as my parents risked everything to ensure I had a better life. My mom worked long hours as a maid in hotels we couldn’t afford to stay at, while my dad drove a taxi. However, my family almost lost everything during the 2007 housing crisis and again, when my father lost his taxi medallion as a result of the taxi debt crisis.
As I watched my family fight to stay afloat in the face of countless problems, I looked to our elected officials for help and was sorely disappointed. Whether in City Hall, Albany, or DC, the individuals we elected to represent us were far more focused on helping corporations and special interests than families like mine.
I am running because I am sick of my community being overlooked or cast aside by our elected officials. I am running to fight for every immigrant family, working-class family, and community of color like mine that has faced exclusion, inequity, and racism. I will fight for everyone in our community who has been failed by decades of Albany ineffectiveness that has left us with high property taxes, under-resourced schools, and underfunded senior centers.
Last year when I ran for Congress against an entrenched incumbent, you had my back and we gave him his first real challenge in decades. Despite being outspent 10 to 1, I won the 24th Assembly District. I know if we’re able to raise enough money, we will win together and bring change to our city.
That’s why I need your help. While my opponent has the support of corporate special interests and billionaires, I’m not taking money from corporate PACs, real estate developers, or special interests.
