Dear Subscriber,

I'm Greis Torres, the Development Manager at City Limits. I'm reaching out today with a very important ask and to tell you a bit more about what makes City Limits unique:
  • We were the first outlet to report on an overlooked city policy that excluded thousands of applicants from applying for federal emergency housing vouchers. A few weeks later, the city reversed course and overturned the policy. Our story contributed to that change.
  • City Limits had devoted a lot of time and effort over the previous decade covering the demise of multiple local hospitals, the state policies that drove those closures and the health disparities that the contraction in local health care was exacerbating. Our article "Decades of Shrinking Hospital Capacity ‘Spelled Disaster’ for New York’s COVID Response"  was the first comprehensive look at why New York city -- home to multiple world-class medical schools and preeminent hospitals -- was struggling to find beds when the pandemic first hit NYC in 2020. As the mainstream media wove laurels to place atop a certain governor's head, City Limits asked the awkward questions it exists to pose.
  • One of the earliest COVID-19 stories we produced - “A Nursing Home Had One COVID Case. Then Came The New, Infected Patients” - rendered a detailed look at the impact of COVID-19 on a single award-winning nursing home. It was among the first (and certainly the most thorough) to document the impact of Gov. Cuomo's order compelling nursing homes to accept COVID releases from hospitals. The article delved deep into the operational details that made that order so problematic and, months before anyone else, the article raised questions about the state's official death toll which increased after we published the story. We believe the rise reflected a recategorization of earlier deaths (not new fatalities) and was a response to our scrutiny.
These are just a few examples showing the impact our reporting has had over the past year, but City Limits has been doing this type of impactful reporting for over four decades. Our reporting is essential to keeping our community informed so we can better navigate the ever-changing landscape of our city.

City Limits depend on the support of readers like you to keep this critical work going. We are participating in a nationwide movement to support nonprofit newsrooms. NewsMatch will match your new monthly donation 12x or double your one-time gift, all up to $1,000 per individual. This opportunity will help us keep making a real difference in New York City.

Will you help power the news that works for you and our democracy?
