How are cities and counties using racial equity tools?
Structural racism and the social determinants of health are key influencers of health outcomes, and addressing them in policy development and implementation is crucial to reducing racial and ethnic health disparities. Researchers at Saint Louis University investigated which jurisdictions are using racial equity tools and how they are using them. They found that more than 107 jurisdictions in the US have used racial equity tools, and some have prioritized and enacted laws to address systemic racism and the social determinants of health.
Insights on affordable housing policies from key stakeholders
The U.S. is facing a housing affordability crisis that continues to exacerbate economic and racial inequities. Rent control and
inclusionary zoning policies could serve as solutions, but they can be controversial and complicated. Urban Institute researchers conducted interviews to learn how tenant advocates, landlords, developers, policymakers, and practitioners think about these policies and shared insight from their conversations.
Who has access to paid parental leave in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Substantial research shows the benefits of parental leave for both new parents and their children, but disparities in access exist. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, examined differences in access to government- and employer-paid leave and found non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic women in the San Francisco Bay Area were less likely to have paid leave, and when they did have paid leave, they were paid less.
