“Stop airline turkeys from gobbling up contracted workers’ benefits!”
With Thanksgiving around the corner, a human-size turkey will join Virginia Delegates Alfonso Lopez and Elizabeth Guzman outside of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) headquarters this afternoon (see Calendar) to demand that airlines ensure contracted wheelchair and customer service agents, baggage handlers, cabin and terminal cleaners and security officers receive paid sick leave and affordable health care. “The airlines gobbled up a $54 billion in federal bailout
while contracted workers got sick and died to keep airports running, it’s time for them to stop from profiting at the expense of worker health and safety,” says Delegate Guzman. “The airlines can and must prioritize public health by ensuring that contracted workers receive paid sick leave and health care,” says Delegate Lopez. “We sacrificed our lives working through COVID, but we still don’t get benefits and must come to work sick because we can’t afford to lose pay,” said Paul Blair, 32BJ SEIU member and terminal cleaner at Dulles Airport suffering from arthritis and heart problems. “How much pain must I endure to make sure I don’t lose my job?” Today’s event is part of a week of action Nov. 15-19 by the unions of Airport Workers United.
